This is not a chanterelle. The cap of a chanterelle is usually funnel shaped. Chanterelles also have blunt ridges that run down the stem, instead of true gills. Chanterelles are usually yellow or white. Chanterelles are not brown. The spore print of a chanterelle is not black, but white to light yellow. This is clearly not a chanterelle.

I read your description farther, and a chanterelle does not have a black spore print, but then neither do the other candidates for this ID. Are you certain it's black?

This looks more like a false chanterelle: the gills are too deep and end too high on the stalk, and the stalk looks too flimsy. If cut in half lengthwise, what does it look like? A true chanterelle will be very heavy with thick, white flesh while the false chanterelle will be hollow-stemmed and less fleshy. This almost looks like a Laccaria laccata.
