Field Notes

Description:

It is a medium sized erebid moth that has brown wings with a nice blue and white patches on the bottom of the wings. The moth has a nice behavior, it is to fly around happily and land flapping it's wings a couple of times. This behavior is typical for most moths that are in the family erebidae or more classified as the catocalinae. The moths caterpillars are inchworms that feed on a variety of different plants that includes, plums, maples and, willows in the area. This one was the first one i saw the whole spring and i am glad that they are there.

Habitat:

It was sitting on a wall and was well Camouflaged to the brick wall that is was sitting on.It was probably there because i set up an light trap the day before and it probably sat the entire night until the morning.

Notes:

This specimen has a form called edusa. This form is the most stunning from the colors ranging from blue to a creme white.I got some information from the website dallasbutterflies.com that aims on recording species from around the DFW.
