Field Notes

Description:

The chrysalis of the large white butterfly. When the larva is ready to pupate, it wanders away from its food plant and usually selects something like a fence, or overhang on a building like a window sill (in this case, the metal railing next to a footpath). They can remain in the pupal stage over winter, and will emerge next May - though I think this one is empty.

Habitat:

Large whites are one of the most common butterflies in the UK, and live everywhere from meadows to urban areas.

Notes:

In the spring/summer, I see a lot of large whites in the area, and even more of their caterpillars.

An insect specialist I follow on Twitter informed me that this is the chrysalis of the large white butterfly! So glad I got an ID for it :)
