Argiope trifasciata
42.9634, -85.6681
Field Notes
Description:
Excellent beautiful spider with yellow and black markings. It is a form of argiope, definitely female. There are many types of argiopes. They are common in gardens throughout the world.
Habitat:
It lived in a hanging basket full of portulaca for about 1 month outside my front porch next to my flower garden. It was there during the August and September months. The habitat is hot in the summer and very cold in the winter. We are surrounded by woods and a nearby river.
Notes:
One day it was just gone and its web was destroyed. We figure a bird came down and ate it.
In some countries argiopes have been used in "spider fighting" matches for centuries...see the wikipedia link here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spider_fighting
