Field Notes

Description:

Large wading birds easily recognised by the long, straight beak. They are distinguished from the bar-tailed godwit by the longer legs, beak and pied colouration when in flight. During the summer, they have a brilliant rich chestnut-red colour, but here this individual is demonstrating the duller winter plumage. They are found often on mudflats, probing for worms and snails.

Habitat:

Near wetlands or wet meadows, sometimes found at inland wetland sites, but generally found nearer the coast.

Notes:

There were two of these godwits when I first saw them, but this one chased off the other! I spent a long time watching it, so that it eventually felt safe enough to get close to me. It was constantly probing the exposed mudflat. I've seen godwits here before, but they are not common. I have a video, which I cannot upload at the moment, but watch this space!

Thanks all for the nice comments! I love how the same animal can be seen in such a far away place! I hope you get some nice photos of them, Satyen :)
