Field Notes

Description:

Atlas moths (Attacus atlas) are considered the largest moths in the world in terms of total wing surface area, wingspan reaching over 25 cm.
I think this is a female, females are larger and heavier.

Habitat:

Highland tropical forest of Kinabalu park, Kundasang, Sabah, Malaysia.

Notes:

I can't get a close photograph because it was resting high up under a hut's roof.
>>>Map accuracy : 50m diameter.

Thanks Dan. You can spot lots of them in Kinabalu National Park. I wish I had your camera stand back then, so that I could lift the camera up high enough to get a good shot of it :-)
Yes, they are as large as a small bird. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_-Ab3LtWIW_g/TEqwD7nWx0I/AAAAAAAAAIw/0MUS8ynG470/s1600/atlas-moth.jpg
Does this one have a wingspan of 25cm??? (I think it would scare me, it's the size of a bird!!!)
Beautiful photo and find!
