Field Notes

Description:

A wasp moth. It looks like Horama panthalon but there are enough differences that lead me to suspect another species. Seen near Cancun Mexico. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Notes:

Came to lights at night. This Yucatan spotting seems a bit different than the ones I can see from the Texas area. I know there are 3 subspecies of this moth. One is called Horama panthalon texana and another is called Horama panthalon panthalon. I am wondering if my spotting could be the latter but I cannot find any images of it except for a mention of it in Wikipedia.

Great job on finding a match! I just looked at 2 other sites and they confirm Horama oedippus matches yours as well.
Hi Brian38. Based on a "Project Noah Related spottings" there is a mating pair of these moth that are identified as Horama oedippus. They look like a perfect match. I found this reliable site that pretty much confirms the ID. http://v3.boldsystems.org/index.php/Taxbrowser_Taxonpage?taxid=16417 What do you think?
John you are absolutely right about the markings being different. I haven't found a match yet but I'll keep looking. Possibly an unknown subspecies. Or just hasn't been well documented or updated. I'll pull the ID off for now.
Thank you Brian38 for the ID. You may want to read the note I added above about the possibility of a subspecies.
Great pic of an incredible moth!!
