Field Notes

Description:

This mushroom is a brown-chestnut color. When we picked it up, it had no smell. The gills on this mushroom were attached. This mushroom was not slimy and the stem was white and it had little hairs on it. There was no spore print. The cap was round and tall. There was no collar.

Genus Lactarius
Kingdom: Fungi
Subkingdom: Dikarya
Phylum: Basidiomycota
Subphylum: Agaricomycetes
Order: Russulales
Family: Russulaceae
Genus: Lactarius

Habitat:

This mushroom was farther in the woods than our other mushroom (the California Fungi) and it was in a light sunny area.

Notes:

On a cold November day, Mr. P’s class went outside to look for fungi. We found our first fungi, ( The California Fungi) and now we have to look for more.
As we head deeper in the woods, we come upon a yellow and white mushroom. This mushroom was under trees so it was a bit dark and damp. The mushroom had attached gills and they were white. Our mushroom that we found was not growing off of other mushrooms. It was by itself. It was about 2.5 cm tall. The mushroom is dark yellow on the inside and white on the rims. We think this mushroom is Genus Lactarius.

Nice pictures and nice notes, I thought it was cool how you showed a close up of the hairy stem. Good Job!
I found this mushroom in our area too, we didn't have any idea what this mushroom is so we did't post it.
