Description:

Found in eastern north america, varies in color from silverly gray to black, but most of the time they are brown. It grows on the side of many different types of trees, causing it to rot. It continues to live on the trees- long after they have died changing from a parasite to a decomposer.

Notes:

Field Notes; It was very warm out, the mushroom is black w/ brown. It does not have a stalk. It is growing on a tree. The inside was brown& there was a maggot inside it.

ahh the second pictures should be an old decaying Fomes fomentarius

This mushroom is found by the neandethaler/ice man -- ötzi.He probably used it as tinder--> hence the common name: tinder fungus or ice man fungus! good luck
I agree I think you should add more notes and I'm also kinda confused about the second picture, is it even the mushroom.
