Field Notes

Description:

Hognose snakes will "play dead" if disturbed, rolling on their backs and letting their tongues hang out. If they are flipped back on their bellies then they will turn back over onto their backs. That being said, as much fun as this is, these animals are in some trouble across their range and should not be disturbed unless you are tagging them for radio tracking anyhow.

Habitat:

Sandy areas.

Notes:

Location is not exact in order to protect the crucial nesting habitat where these animals were found. These pictures were taken as my wife and I accompanied researchers on a field excursion. The "studio" shots were taken in the field with a black velveteen background.

The second photo is fabulous! lol. What a unique shot. I see you have a lot of snake spottings. You should check out the mission Snakes of the World. They would make a great addition. Snakes are beautiful organisms. : )
