Field Notes

Description:

Monsoon marks the arrival of this annual Pomponia sp. of Cicadas which I've come across often emerging in the night while looking for herps. Having seen Bats, Centipedes, Crickets feeding on them before, watching an army of Ant devour this Cicada while emerging from its exuvia was quite the encounter.

Habitat:

Rainforest and Evergreen forest of Agumbe which is a part of the Western Ghats. It is also recognized as one of the world’s eight hottest hotspots' of biological diversity, inscribed in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage sites list in July 2012

Wow, such an interesting spotting. Tragic for the poor cicada though :(
While researching for my book on survival I learnt that this is the species' survival strategy. It satiates the predators ..those emerging later go on to lay eggs....those that emerge first act as food to dull the hunger pangs of predators. Brutal....but effective That is why the large numbers.
