Field Notes

Description:

Medium-sized assassin bug, body mostly red, with black wings. Ventral side of thorax is black, dorsal side of abdomen has black spots along the margins. Legs banded in black and tan. Has notched prosternal groove, identifying it as an assassin bug.

Habitat:

Forest, field.

Notes:

This pretty assassin bug is quite lively in the field and readily takes to flight. The individuals I have found have been at the fringes of forests and in fields. This assassin bug is in the subfamily Ectrichodiinae, which contains millipedes that prey on millipedes. Whether this one follows that pattern or not is something I would like to investigate this summer. For a little more information, you can read a blog post I wrote about it here: http://normalbiology.blogspot.com/2011/10/fluorescent-millipedes-sweet…. Found at Barbara A. Beiser Field Station. Note that the first photo is of an individual found on June 6.
