Field Notes

Description:

Black and white spider with striped legs, spotted abdomen and gray cephalothorax. It makes a double web. One is an orb web the other is a trash filled cone that the spider houses in and leaves the remains of its kill. There is a web that connects the center of the orb web to the conical web.

Habitat:

Backyard in the corner of a wire fence.

Thank you martinl. I looked at BugGuide in hopes of an ID but this genus is difficult to ID! I didn't look at M. labyrinthea because I didn't think it was found in Cali but then we tend to get a lot of organisms from other parts of the country and world through various methods. I have to admit it looks quite possible!
