Field Notes

Description:

Beetles are almost entirely black, with edges of the pronotum, mouth parts and genitalia being orange.

Habitat:

Forest

Notes:

It was quite a feat of acrobatics to watch these two mating, even while I caught them. One is just being dragged along behind the other: that takes some skill. The female is 11 mm in length, and the male is 8.5 mm. A common species and probably a firefly mimic, found at Barbara A. Beiser Field Station.
