Field Notes

Description:

Small newt, only around 3 inches long. Orange body with brighter orange spots ringed in black.

Habitat:

Damp forest floor: leaf litter

Notes:

The red eft is the juvenile form of the eastern spotted newt. In this stage, the newt is terrestrial and is found in damp places on the forest floor. Once they reach adulthood, they switch to an aquatic lifestyle. Found at Barbara A. Beiser Field Station.
