Description:

growing up in a rough neighborhood; ohia growing on basalt near vents discharging sulphur dioxide

Habitat:

active volcano within tropical rain forest, just uphill from and windward of a tropical desert

Notes:

spotted at Sulphur Banks within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park; ohia is a widespread Hawaiian endemic species which has evolved several varieties in different local conditions
