Field Notes

Description:

I believe this is an assassin bug of some variety.
The first displayed image was the 3rd image in a series of 3 images, and was taken after the second shown (appearing to show it attempting to draw nectar from the closed bud).

Habitat:

Found on unknown flower buds in local community college's butterfly garden.
There are many other assassin bug varieties in the same garden, as well as many nymphs.

Notes:

It appears to be prodding the flower bud with it's proboscis. There seems to be a recent increase in assassin bug population not only in the butterfly garden, but across the city as of the last 2-3 years.

Species ID Suggestions

Large Milkweed Bug

Oncopeltus fasciatus

Comments (1)

Not a Reduviidae, but Lygaeidae. Looks like being another Oncopeltus fasciatus or similar. http://bugguide.net/node/view/805714/bgimage
