Field Notes

Description:

small white-ish female eriococcid bug (cut away) inside a large gall growth. Small red tipped growths on the gall are other galls formed by male bugs

Habitat:

Several galls growing on stem of eucalyptus

Notes:

Male galls form on large female gall tissue and the insects are short lived. They fly to her to mate, as she can never leave her home.

The final pic appears to have been predated. The tissue has died and exit holes appear. Interestingly, no males are growing on the wings of this gall.
