Habitat:

Regularly near the ocean, but I have seen in farm fields which is just plain strange to me.

This is more likely to be a herring gull. Lesser black-backs don't occur where you spotted this.
Lovely fellow. Not sure how Atul is so sure about the ID, I think there are quite a few options as to what this fellow could be. But I'm not so good with the US Gull families. Them being in fields is not so unusual. They most likely eat the seeds there, I think.
