Description:

The compound heads of pistils which are green and scaly or prickly in appearance, give this plant its common name as they also somewhat resemble thimbles. This plant is also sometimes called tumbleweed because the fruit and seed (achene) appear to tumble in the wind.

Canada: AB , BC , MB , NB , NL , NS , ON , QC , SK
Native Distribution: Almost cross the entire southern half of Canada. In the US from central ME to MN, s. to GA, TN, AR, & e. KS
Native Habitat: Woodlands, Forest Edges, Prairies, Meadows, Fields
