Description:

These small mud fiddlers were seen in the marshy shore under a boardwalk along Charleston Harbor. A large male is seen guarding what is probably his burrow, using his enlarged claw to attract a female for mating and/or warding off other males in close proximity. His burrow can be up to 2 feet deep; his female mate will reside inside it during the two-week incubation period, after which she will release their eggs during a favorable tide.

Habitat:

Natural range: north-western shores of the Atlantic Ocean, from Cape Cod to northern Florida. The mud fiddler prefers a muddy marsh environment where the substrate is relatively free of heavy plant roots, yet stable enough to allow for the construction of burrows.

Notes:

Spotted near the marina in Charleston Harbor
