That's amazing about the caterpillar. Did you get ant pics? This gets even more curious. I'm no closer with an id. Here's a link to my orange-shouldered blue metal bug... http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/8191948
Martinl, I am still puzzled with this one. This one is similar but still not the same :( http://www.flickriver.com/photos/jen_in_brisbane/3452555426/ - I found this one just poisoned a pieris rapae caterpillar - in 5 minutes it turned purple. Hope to see them again in different stages.
These are confusing since adult looks different from nymph. I'm not aware of cotton harleguin occuring in Sydney or Melbourne where your spottings are, but the red jewel bug is http://www.flickr.com/photos/66925960@N08/6190127023/in/set-72157627535727165 . I've tracked another one http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/8183185 through its cycle which is green as an adult. When I guessed the adult, I proved myself wrong. The red Jewel bug is also a guess. Someone out there knows, or we must grow one out. I cannot find an image of its nymph =(
That was exactly my problem with the ID - your photos are much better than mine which will help a lot.
Argy, it looks like a Cotton Harlequin Bug (tectoris diopthalmus) but the orange pattern is different.
