Field Notes

Notes:

After a spring storm and a cold spell, this redwinged blackbird decided that a snack from the feeder was better than not eating. I have fed birds for years and this was the first redwinged blackbird to visit my feeder. It was traveling with a flock of Grackles.

Yay! I can't wait to see what you can capture :))
Not yet but I plan to venture down there with my camera (& some protective clothing!) next spring! The males are much easier to photograph down here because they just perch on the telephone wires & sing while the female do all the work protecting the nests!
LOL..I was confusing you with another Karen..but so thrilled to hear that you get to enjoy them down in Tennessee!! Have you posted any pics of them yet? Thanks for your comments :D
I'm actually a Brit but living in Tennessee now. I have been to Maine - I love New England it's such a beautiful part of the world & great skiing too! We have a 400' long drainage ditch at the bottom of our land & it is overgrown with cattails, milkweeds & goldenrod. The blackbirds & sparrows love it there & we get whole flocks visiting & many nests. Every other property along our road has neatly mowed ditches but ours looks like a jungle!
Karen, I can imagine that they don't seem so sweet when they are dive bombing you with those pointy beaks. I'm glad you have a chance to watch them nesting close to home. :) I was so happy to see that you were from Maine too! Thanks Atul, they really will eat out of anything, but they do really like this feeder. The metal on it keeps the squirrels from chewing through the feeder. I'll post more birds that have visited and can't wait to browse your pictures also. :)
this is cool , just love these feeders u have ,they attract a lot of colorful birds . i have custom made a feeder ,one only for rose ringed parakeets and the other for house sparrows ....
They are lovely - we have several that nest in the ornamental grasses by our mailbox & I regularly get dive-bombed by the females when I go to pick up the mail!
I hope you get to see one too Carol :) They have a beautiful call and nest on cattails.
Oh, I hope this type of bird comes to my feeder. So pretty and great photo!
