Apis mellifera

Field Notes
Description:
There are not many wild bee hives left in the state of Florida because of the tiny Varroa Mite, which kill the honey bees. Orange trees need honeybees to pollinate them to make fruit and seeds.
Habitat:
Although I live near an abandoned orange grove, the Honeybees that I located were gathering pollen from Lantana and Spanish Needle flowers.
Notes:
Honeybees are very friendly and are not easily frightened unless there is sudden movement. They are very beautiful to watch as they gather pollen. The back legs of the worker female honeybee have little sacs to carry pollen.
