Field Notes
Habitat:
Sandy bottoms near coral reefs (to 200 feet), forming large colonies ('gardens') with each eel in its own permanent burrow.
Common to occasional in the Antilles, the Bahamas, southern Florida, and off the northwestern Caribbean coasts (Yucatan, Belize, Honduras).
Notes:
Here seen feeding. Each one with its body out and head into the current. If approached, they withdraw into their burrows. At first they look just like a sparse patch of sea grass on a sandy area.
