Description:

This heron must have swallowed something that was not going down the right way and seemed to be gagging a bit. This provided passersby with an opportunity to observe its long and muscular tongue, which is not usually seen. When I left, the bird had apparently taken care of what was bothering it as it stopped tossing its head and settled down to preen.

Habitat:

A former wetland that was drained by a home-owners association to move beavers away that had dammed the area
