Field Notes

Description:

An european species of thrush; the male is easily recognized, all black with an yellow bill and a yellow ring around the eye. Female and juvenile look alike, all brown with spots and streaks on breast. On pics 3 & 4, I believe juvenile; because of that slight yellow in the corner of the bill.

Habitat:

Common all over Europe and Asia, as well as North Africa, where it is native. It was introduced in other parts of the world. Here seen feeding on grass in semi wooded parts of Lokrum island near Dubrovnik.

Notes:

I would like to mention here that the island of Lokrum has a very special status - this a Nature Reserve and a Special Forest Vegetation Reserve. I'm not sure about National monuments, but there may also be something. As such, plenty of measures are reinforced: it is not allowed to endanger in any way the natural and cultural goods on the island, to throw the waste, bring dogs or light the fire. Smoking is prohibited. It is not allowed to stay on the island overnight. While respecting these (unfortunately, many people don't respect these), the island is very worth visit and exploration... The arrival and the departure to and from the island are organized from the Dubrovnik ancient Town port, where you can find the sailing timetable.
