Field Notes

Description:

Red mangroves displaying the prop roots which arch above sea level. The tree also serves as a habitat for fishing birds. Site is Long Caye Island, Lighhouse Reef Atoll.

Habitat:

This tree dominates the zone proximal to warm open marine water. At Long Caye, the Red Man is a outer zone of trees on the islannd. As one approaches the interior, the trees changes to black mangroves, then wheite mangroves, then buttonwoods.
