Description:

Blue sea fan near the island of Long Caye, Lighthouse Reef Atoll. The fan faces the water current to capture the greatest number of food organisms for each of it polyps. Many sea fans contain algae, or zooxanthellae. This symbiotic relationship assists in giving the gorgonian nutrition via photosynthesis. Gorgonians possessing zooxanthellae are usually characterized by brownish polyps. This sea fan has brightly colored polyps and is deriving most of its nutrients from filter feeding.

Habitat:

Fans are found primarily in shallow waters. This one is in less than 10 feet of water.

Notes:

Photo taken by staff and students from Brookhaven College during a field study to characterize the environment of a nearly pristine reef environment.
