huge orange and black wasp
41.0534, -73.5387
Field Notes
Habitat:
Amazing large brite orange wasp, a small population is obviously active in a goldenrod field since i could spot individual differences in wing damage (someone is nipping them, but they seem to carry on). They are all feeding on pollen of the recently blooming goldenrod, very avidly. I have seen NO PREDATOR prey on other prey pollinating insects with this food abundance present. They must be predators? This species also feeds on mint flowers and dodder plant inflourescences (visits and puts their faces in these plant parts for VERY long periods of time going from flower to flower. I am not detecting pollen on their bodies which i do see on other wasp species feeding on goldenrod.
