Field Notes

Description:

A lovely butterfly species found in extreme western North America from Oregon to northern Baja. It hosts on oak species, primarily the coast live oak, that provide toxins for the adult. The butterfly advertises its unpalatability with its bright colors and striking contrasts. The Lorquin's admiral looks similar to this species but is actually a mimic as it possesses no toxins of its own.
