Field Notes

Description:

Also known as St. James-wort. Asteraceae family. Erect stems, lobed leaves and yellow flowers. Is common to see it prairies where the cows and horses pace because they are toxic and they do not eat them. it produce big amounts of nectar and feed a great variety of pollinators. It is also knows as the food of caterpillars of the cinnabar moth Tyria jacobaeae. They absorb alkaloids from the plant and become distasteful to predators, a fact advertised by the black and yellow warning colours.

Spotted at Sierra de Guadarrama, El Espìnar, Segovia, Spain
