Description:

Giant water bug (not a beetle) with grasping forelegs.

Habitat:

Found in the tanamai desert in Northern Australia

Notes:

Yes they do bite:(
Attracted to camp lights at night. I saw only one.

The 'bite' is really a jab with its proboscis. Still rather painful.

It's " bite" is a jab with its proboscis. I was holding it, and too excited to let it go. I took all NT pics with an iPhone camera and the last upload from wave hill station was located automatically by the picture data so I thought this one would too. All fixed now.
