Field Notes

Habitat:

This Peacock Pansy was spotted in our backyard, resting in a patch of weeds.

Notes:

Nymphalidae; Nymphalinae; Nymphaliini; Junonia almana almana Linnaeus, 1758. Peacock Pansies always seem to be rather skittish and I usually have to follow them around to get more than one photo. However, this one was quite placid and I noticed that it was in perfect condition. I quickly realised that it had probably just emerged from its chrysalis and was not yet ready to fly. So, I backed off and left it in peace One photo of this beautiful creature was enough.
