Field Notes

Habitat:

All over New Zealand but these I spotted in a forrest on the Arthurs pass. The locals call them New Zealands little speed bumps. They were imported for their fur and now they are a real pest destroying the local wildlife.

No problem FoTony. I agree, totally.
Hi Lori, please do not misunderstand me, I love those little furballs but they should never have been introduced to the NZ's wildlife.
I'm loath to think of these as pests, as we love ours, Tony. But their introduction to NZ has been tragic, mostly because they've entered an environment with out predatory checks on them nor have the tree evolved to make themselves unpalatable to mammals.
Please consider adding this to the "Marsupials of the World" mission at http://www.projectnoah.org/missions/8445402
Cool looking creature!
Nice, yes I remember when we were there they were considered pests.
Lovely! You might want to consider putting the last image first, as this is the one that shows this lovely little guy in most detail. I think you will get more viewing with that photo as the thumbnail. You can rearrange the order in edit mode by dragging & dropping.
nice spotting!!
It's much cuter than the ones we have here in Florida.
