Field Notes

Description:

Hardy shrub, about 1m tall, with many thick but naked branches, producing leaves and flowers at the end of them.

Habitat:

Grows everywhere around; in fields, on road edges, in urban areas... here observed in an inundated rice field.

Notes:

I believe (and thanks SukanyaDatta for the help in IDing this flower) that this is Ipomoea carnea - Pink morning glory... This plant, considered a weed around here, in Bangladesh; is also of medicinal value as it contains a sedative and anticonvulsant component. Moreover, it appears that a glycosidic saponin, with anticarcinogenic and oxytoxic properties, has also been purified from this plant.

Looks like Ipomea. but not sure if Ipomea carnea or I. aquatica. I think I. carnea as the leaves are broader.
