Plestiodon fasciatus (Eumeces fasciatus)
34.4152, -96.5393
Field Notes
Description:
Small terrestrial skink with a snout-to-vent length of 2-3 inches. Juveniles have a brilliant blue tail which turns a coppery brown with age.
Habitat:
Found among the leaf litter in an oak-hickory forest.
Notes:
This lizard can readily detach its tail when threatened. The tail will continue to thrash about for several minutes, diverting attention from the skink and allowing a quick getaway!
