Field Notes

Description:

Neither moss nor fern, this genus has many common names. Some authorities place it in group of plants called lycopods, a "fern ally". Others consider it a genus of plants in the family Selaginellaceae, the spikemosses. Based on superficial (available) image comparisons, it looks most like Selaginella longipinna or "electric fern"

Habitat:

Growing in patches along survey transects in equatorial lowland rainforest interspersed with sago swamp. This particular plant was growing atop a fossil beach strand (moist but above standing water).
