Unkwn Earwig
Dermaptera
-1.5, -78.05
Field Notes
Description:
This insect was about 1.3 cm long and reddish brown in color. It has proportionately long antenna and possessed of two short tail appendages. I would guess it is in the earwig family.
Habitat:
I found this insect on the kitchen counter in the town of Shell in the Amazon rainforest of SE Ecuador. It was calm until I got the camera and then went fast like lightening to get under the cupboard. Camera shy, I guess
Notes:
This has been a puzzler. I was thinking earwig or some member of the order Archaeognatha. However in all these, the tail appendages don't match my photo. I believe I will go with Leuba's suggestion of an earwig (Dermaptera) and leave any further classification to the experts.
