Field Notes

Description:

Alternative doubly serrate leaves with side leaf veins forking only a few times. Smooth twigs and buds, distinguishing it from slippery elm (Ulmus rubra).

Habitat:

Forest

Notes:

Grows along streams, susceptible to Dutch Elm Disease, limiting its range, as well as how old these trees get. Found at Barbara A. Beiser Field Station.
