Description:
A little longer than an inch, this millipede is a nice purple-brown color (notice how well it blends in with the piece of dead wood) with spots of orange in the middle of each segment's dorsal side. The paranota (flared edges of each segment) also have orange spots.
Habitat:
Forest, under the bark of decaying logs.
Notes:
A common species of millipede, you can find this species in decaying wood. According to Rowland Shelley, they're not found in association with pines or leaf litter. This is a millipede that's more than meets than eye: it exhibits UV fluorescence! If you shine a UV flashlight on this millipede, it will glow a nice blue-green color. Found at Barbara A. Beiser Field Station.
