Field Notes

Description:

Salticidae; Heliophaninae; Carrhotus sannio Thorell, 1877. This little jumping spider has been one of my favourites for several years now. For much of that time, I called it a male Carrhotus sannio (based on information back in 2017 from a web site which is now defunct). Since I no longer had a good citation, I started referring to this spider as Carrhotus sp. However, I have had a comment from bayucca, suggesting that it is Carrhotus sannio. On some further checking, I can now say that I am pretty sure that C. sannio has been the correct identification all along. So I am amending this spotting and will also fix the others I have posted on Project Noah.

Habitat:

Spotted on our vegetable patch in a field not being used for rice. It kept dashing away and hiding from my camera, but when I picked it up, it remained calm on my hand long enough for some pictures.

Species ID Suggestions

Comments (4)

John B., Like you, the IDs in my posts are all based on comparison with other posts with the naked eye, my photographic equipment and abilities don't allow me to go into details so nothing is certain about IDs. You are very careful when stopping at Genus.
To: Võ Anh Tuấn Thank you very much for your very fast response to my request for help. I am amazed by how quickly you can do things. The leads you have provided (one from India and another from Thailand) are very helpful. The one from India has many similarities, but is not exact, but it does convince me that my specimen is from the Carrhotus Genus. That is a good start. Now, the one from Thailand is almost completely identical to mine, with only very small differences. So now I can revise my spotting in P.N. with more confidence. I will call it Carrhotus sp. for now. Thank you once again for all your help. Best regards, John B.
