Field Notes

Description:

Larval case - What comes out of this cocoon???
This fly-like moth emerged.

Habitat:

Sometimes common on gum trees. They eat leaves over-night, then stitch themselves onto a branch for their daily nap. Neat.

Notes:

Female casemoths live out their lives inside the case. Males will emerge from one end as tiny clear winged moths.

Yes but if the cocoon is a female they get nothing at all.
Ha! And they get something that looks a lot like a blow-fly.
People sometimes collect this cocoon to await, in hope and futility for the beautiful butterfly to emerge
I haven't seen these since the early 60's... ! Nice to know they're still around.
