Field Notes

Description:

Small fly of about 4mm body length. They are associated with Prickly Pears (Opuntia sp). The larvae feed on rotting cactus while the adults feed on sugary secretions released by the opuntias.

Habitat:

Semi-arid region in central Mexico, in El Cimatario national park.
