Field Notes

Description:

At first I thought this was a Monarch but it is lacking the antennas. Plus this one has orange dots.

Habitat:

Walking on a cement wall area at a storage shed facility.

Notes:

I'm not entirely sure about the date because all I can find is my web file I saved from Photoshop which changed the date.

Holly - Black Swallowtail caterpillars change form several times as caterpillars, so that makes it even harder! Check out the pictures here to see what I mean: http://www.butterflygardeningandconservation.com/butterfly/st/black.php
I looked up Swallowtail and there were so many conflicting images I got unsure. So the Black one huh? :) Thank you!
It is a late instar Black Swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes). They love to eat fennel, dill, parsley, Queen Anne's Lace, and more.
