Field Notes
Description:
Brown fur with distinct white markings on sides, breasts, bellies, rumps, and throats. Females are of similar height but weigh less than male counterparts. Feet have two hooves, but no dewclaws. Both sexes possess horns, but female horns are significantly shorter and are rarely pronged. Males possess a small patch of black hair at the angle of the mandible, further differentiating them from the females. Pronghorn possess very large eyes with a 320 degree field of vision.
Habitat:
Prefers open, expansive terrain at elevations ranging from 3,000-5,900 feet. Tend to remain within 3-4 miles of water. Recent studies show pronghorn use an overland migration route that covers more than 160 miles.
Notes:
Fastest land mammal in the Western Hemisphere. Second fastest land animal worldwide, exceeded only by the cheetah. Interestingly, the pronghorn can sustain high speeds for longer distances than the cheetah.
