This is most definitely a Southern Black Racer (just posted a spotting of one myself not long ago). Lovely harmless snakes, but unfortunately don't see near as many as years gone by...Lovely spotting and photo!
I wish you luck with finding one, Goody! This one was passing from one wooded area to another, but detoured up against the house rather than through an open field!! I am still getting used to Melbourne!!
