Field Notes

Description:

Clusters of these in the woodchips. Brick-red/brown caps when they're young, fragile white stem, fuzzy mycelium base, turning pale when older.

Habitat:

Ground in woodchip plantings and on woodchip path.

Notes:

I've been seeing these around and have uploaded a few photos of these in different stages of growth. There will be some old ones that turn totally pale as pictured above. It makes me think they're Psathyrella from looking at books. I was never able to get a spore print. I tried, but nothing produced. So this is just a guess. Then they just shrivel up dark.

a Psathyrella for sure. You can dry a few next time you find them - and put them in a little box you can make from 3x5 notecards. We can ID it to species later.
