Cedar-Apple Rust
Gymnosporangium juniperi-virginianae
34.4092, -96.5403
Field Notes
Description:
Rust-colored galls form on the twigs of Eastern Red Cedar trees in times of sufficient rain. As they mature, the galls produce the tendrils of gelatinous goo which can swell until their sheer weight causes them to drop from the tree onto the ground.
Habitat:
At Camp Simpson, ground zero for this particular mission, the rust is found only on Eastern Red Cedar trees (Juniperus virginiana).
Notes:
No harm to the affected trees has been detected.
