Field Notes

Description:

A small, 3-4 cm. freshwater fish related to the guppy. An upturned mouth on the top of the head (as opposed to the front) allows this fish to pursue its preferred prey, mosquito larvae.

Habitat:

Found in most bodies of water in Oklahoma, Gambusia prefers cool, running water in shallow streams. In larger ponds and lakes, it can be found in the shallow water around the edge of the water.

Notes:

This is a live-bearing species that can produce 6-9 broods in a single breeding season. The breading season for Gambusia runs from mid-spring well into fall, with the peak being during summer months.
